Overview

The tallest trekking peak of Nepal, Mera Peak, is a topmost destination for climbing starters around the world. Situated in the historic land of Mt Everest, Mera Peak has been providing grounds for mountaineers since its opening. Mera Peak lies in the highest part of the Himalayas, Mahalangur section which is the north-most part of the Solukhumbu region of Nepal. The highest trekking peak of Nepal is pointed with three main tops, i.e. Mera Central(6,476m), Mera North(6,476m), and Mera South(6,065m).

Tenzing Norway Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary, the first climbers of Mount Everest started the trend of climbing the Mera peak before, and after the Everest ascent. Since then its popularity is never unhyped; rather, it is increasing year by year. Mera Peak climbing is taken as the ground to prepare yourself before the Everest climb.

Every 12 months thousands of climbers touchdown Nepal just to do Mera Peak climbing. Mountaineering beginners hold a larger share than the pro climbers. The climbing and technical setting of Mera Peak is ideal for beginners to lace their shoes. This is why it is considered as the best mountain to start the climbing journey.

Amateurs get to test how to use crampons, ice-axe, and other mountaineering gears for the first time during Mera Peak climbing. But that does not mean this climbing is only about the ascent and descent. Mera Peak journey is a long but beautiful journey through the most beautiful part of the world.

A visitor gets to enjoy the close show of four eight-thousanders, Mt Everest(8,848m), Mt Makalu(8,643m), Mt Cho Oyu(8,201m), and Mt Lhotse(8,586m) from the top of Mera Peak. You will be surrounded by the mountain peaks all day long, what could possibly be a better gift than this for a mountain lover!

The journey of Mera Peak runs through the iconic Khumbu region. And this region has got all of the things; unique Sherpa settlements, lush forests, swinging suspension bridges, traditional gompas, monasteries, prayer flags, and many more. It will take too many words to list down what this Mera peak climbing journey offers.

Why don’t you book the Mera Peak expedition with us, Peak Climbing Nepal? We assure you that you will not miss a single thing in this region with us. But before calling us for the booking, you need to know several things about Mera Peak climbing.

This article revolves around and depicts information about Mera Peak Climbing’s route, best time, difficulties, detailed itinerary, and some FAQs. Therefore, read this article thoroughly and then remember us.

Mera Peak Climbing Route

Mera Peak’s journey with the Peak Climbing Nepal team lasts 18 eventful days. This expedition starts by leaving the historic city and the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu for Lukla. We will arrive at Lukla after 35 minutes of scenic air travel from Kathmandu. Soon after arriving in Lukla, you will trek up to Chhuthang on the first day of the tour.

Then you will leave for Thuli Kharka(4300m) via a captivating Zatrawala Pass. After an overnight stay in the Thuli Kharka, your trek runs towards Kothe. From Kothe, you will leave at early morning to reach Thangnak(4326m). After making up to Thangnak and spending a night there, your next destination will be Khare.

The land of Khare provides the glimpses of soon to be climbed, Mera Peak. You will reach Khare for an overnight stay, but there will be one more day in the Khare for acclimatization. This means you will spend two nights staying in Khare before heading for Mera Base Camp(5300m). Your Himalayan trail has started from the base camp of Mera peak, and it will move to Mera High Camp(5,700m) and then to the top of Mera Peak(6,476m).

After the successful summit of Mera peak, you will descend back to the Khare for the night stay on the very day. You will then retrace the earlier trails to return Lukla. On this stretch, you will cross Khare, Kothe, Thuli Kharka, and Lukla in several days. Your last night in the Khumbu region will be at Lukla just one-night before the Kathmandu flight.

Thereafter, you will fly one last time through the Khumbu’s skies to trace back Kathmandu. Soon after landing in Kathmandu, your Mera Peak Climbing expedition with us will end.

Difficulties of Mera Peak Climbing

Distance

Regardless of the routes you take, the minimum distance you will be covering in the Mera Peak climbing is around 125 km. The trails and ascends of the Mera Peak expedition are rough, steep, and snowy. To cover such a long distance in such difficult trails is not an easy task. Thus, the distance is one of the difficulties of Mera Peak climbing.

Route

There are three different routes to ascend Mera Peak, and each of the routes is uniquely difficult or easy. The route one runs via Lukla- Zatr La Pass – Tagnag- Mera Base Camp- High Camp- Summit. This particular route is the shortest but difficult route.

Similarly, the second route is via Lukla- Paiya- Thongnak- Khare-Base Camp- High Camp- Summit. This track is much easier than the earlier route. Therefore, the difficulty level of Mera peak climb is also differentiable with the routes.

Altitude Sickness

Where there are mountains there is fear of altitude sickness. This mountain sickness is possible in higher altitude regions above 3500m. Mera Peak’s journey takes you from the lowest point 1400m(Kathmandu) to the highest 6,476m(Mera Peak). In between these two places, you will change altitudes day by day.

Therefore, anyone who is not good with new or high altitude can get caught by Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS) or Altitude Sickness. And this is one of the most difficult parts of the Mera peak climb.

Weather and Temperature

Weather and temperature of higher regions are unpredictable. With such conditions, there is always a fear of harsh weather. The temperature can drop drastically at any time, and snowfall can occur any day.

And if that happens, your already strenuous Mera Peak climb will level up in difficulty. The warm temperature and rain or snowfall-free days are a must for easy climbing. Thus, any serious change in weather and temperature can cause some difficulties while climbing.

Physical Fitness

Despite having no technical climbing in the Mera peak expedition, a sound fitness level is a minimum thing you require. If you don’t have a good fitness level, build it up. There are various exercises that can boost your fitness, for example, gym workout, hiking, running, etc.

These exercises need to get started at least 2 to 3 months prior to the climb date. And, if you are someone who doesn’t like to do much workout, this preparation of physical fitness can be difficult.

Best Time to Climb Mera Peak

If you have been to Nepal for adventures before then, you surely know the best time for climbing/trekking in Nepal. Autumn and Spring are the two most favored times for Mera Peak climbing. The temperature during these seasons are stable, and there are few chances of snowfall or rainfall.

But, there are two seasons, i.e. Winter and Monsoon, which are considered as the off-season for any of the adventurous outings in Nepal. Winter is the coldest period of a year, and Monsoon is a time of rainfall. The rainfall and snowfall are the two biggest fears of any climb, and very few adventurers want to risk their lives. Thus, the two best times for Mera Peak climbing are Autumn and Spring.

Day 02: Walking Tour at Kathmandu and preparation for Climbing and Trek

Hotel/Resort

Kathmandu is the vintage capital city of Nepal which holds so much of old arts, temples, and monuments. The Kathmandu city tour is a thing not to miss while in Nepal. Therefore, the second day of the Mera Peak Climbing itinerary is scheduled as the city tour. There are several world heritage sites in Kathmandu like Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, and Swyambhunath Stupa and more.

These all of the sites are worth visiting because of their cultural significance, but it is not possible to tour all of them in a day. You have to decide on 3 to 4 places out of all. It will be one of the eventful days of the entire trek as you will trace yourself back to the ancient civilization by making sites tour.

After the successful city tour, you will visit the marketplace for some last-minute shopping. Thamel is the ultimate shopping destination for every trekker and climbers in Nepal. Lastly, you will get back to your hotel for the overnight before the actual start of the trip.

Day 03: Kathmandu to Lukla Flight and uphill trek till Chhuthang

45 min Flight & 4-5 hrs Trek Lodge

Get ready; you are about to start the quest of Mera peak summit. Just like most of the Everest region trek, this expedition will also start with a 45 minutes long flight till Lukla(2800m). The flight will be one of the best experiences of your life. You will get to observe the unreal vision of the entire Himalayan range and greenest hills.

The aerial show will end after landing in Lukla airport, one of the most dangerous airports in the world. While landing, you may feel your heart is popping out of the mouth. Lukla is a gateway to all of the Everest adventures from Mt Everest Expedition to Everest Base Camp Trek. Upon your arrival at Lukla, you will get Local Area Permit from the local authority to move further.

There are several restricted villages that require a permit to enter. After getting the permit, you will head towards east from Lukla for Chhuthang(3020m). Along the way, you will pass several small Sherpa settlements scattered in short distances. You will move forward by touching and seeing the Buddhist Mani walls and Prayer wheels.

Then comes the thick forest of Rhododendron and Pine trees which guides you through the less-trekked trails. This forest stays just below the Kalo Himal Ridge. There are many trails connected with the standard trail which can be confusing, so stay connected with the group and guide. Just follow the stream connected trails as they all go to Chhutang, your ultimate stop.

From the top, you can enjoy the picturesque views of Kongdi Ri, Karyolang Peak, Number Himal, Lumding Himal, and many more. And then you will descend down to Thuli Kharka via Chattre for nearly 1 to 2 hours. All over the trails, you will traverse through some Yak pasture lands. Yaks grazing over such a beautiful terrain, is an unreal and iconic view.

The last trekking hours will be fun as you will get more of such views. Your amazing trekking day will come to its end when you will finish the scenic fall down to Thuli Kharka. Thuli Kharka is a big pasture with several basic tea houses. Your overnight will be at one of the lodges.

Day 05: Trek from Tuli Kharka to Kothe [4182m/13716ft]

6-7 hrs Trek Lodge

You will leave Thuli Kharka Kothe(4,182m) after having breakfast. Today's trail will lead you to the Hinku valley of the Khumbu region. Trek will start with a gentle descend just in front of mountain views. And slowly the track will get a bit disturbed with regular uphills and downhills. But you will enjoy the trek anyway as you will be sliding through the midst of the green and lush forest of Rhododendrons, Pines, Oaks.

As soon as you enter the Hinku valley, you will get the first sight of ultimate destination, i.e. Mera Peak. There will be Mera Peak and several other snow-dotted peaks teasing the Everest skies, and the view is just irresistible. After the view from the tops, you have to make a descent through a bit of straight hill. This particular trail can make you slip if you try to make it quick, so hike slowly.

It won't take too much time and effort to reach the riverbed of the Hinku River from the top. Kothe lies one uphill climb away from the bank of Hinku River; you will push for the last stretch of the day to reach Kothe. To the Hinku valley's west side sits Kothe which is home to the serene wilderness and some Tea houses. The time at Kothe is completely enjoyable.

Day 06: Kothe to Thangnak Trek

4-5 hrs Trek Lodge

After spending a night at Kothe, it is now time to move forward in the Mera Peak Climbing journey. Thangnak will be today's destination, and you have to place your footsteps once again along the Hinku River's riverbed. This river bordered trail guides you towards Gondishung. Walking in the Mera Peak's shadow, you will reach Gondishung and have lunch there.

There a few walks from the Gondishung, you will get to see a two-century-old Buddhist Gompa, Lungsumgba Gompa. People believe that lighting the shrine at this Gompa makes the Mera Peak Climbing successful. In the midday, you will find a rock art that depicts the exact picture of Mera Peak. Get some pictures there before you make the final stretch to reach Thangnak(4,326m).

Here onwards, the trail is easy to trek, so you enjoy the beautiful surrounding. You will reach Thangnak with very little pain and so many views. Thangnak is a Pasture land that sees locals only during Summer to graze their Yaks. But, there are some basic tea houses to provide food and night stay for Mera Peak ascenders.

Day 07: Reach Khare from Thangnak

5-6 hrs Trek Lodge

Mera Peak climbing trail moves towards Khare from Thangnak. This is a bit difficult trek day as you have to pass through the steep moraine trails. The Moraine way will be from Dig Glacier to Dig Kharka where you will be in front of Charpate Himal. This trial will make posts as near as to the nose of Hinku Nap and Shar glaciers. Watch out the track and walk carefully; glacier's way is the most difficult.

After that, there will be a steep hill climb that ends at Khare. This climb will be steeper than the earlier climbs. Therefore, save some energy before starting this climb. The 3 to 4 hours of uphill trek will end after reaching Khare where you can get as many Mera peak views as possible. Khare is the acclimatization point of the Mera Peak climbing itinerary which means you will spend another day tomorrow here.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Altitude: 5000m

Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs

Day 08: Rest at Khare

Lodge

One or two days for acclimatization day is a must in any of high altitude adventures. And peak expedition is the supreme of all of the high adventures. You cannot go straight for the climb without a single acclimatization day. Doing so can cause you to get caught by altitude sickness.

This sickness is prone to any person travelling at an altitude above 5000 meters. And, Mera Peak climbing goes even higher than that as you know the highest point is the summit itself with 6,476m. You have to breathe the air at the height of 6,476m on this Mera Peak expedition.

Without acclimatization before the summit day, you will have an increased risk of altitude sickness. Your body needs some time to adapt to the newer altitudes. Therefore, this rest or acclimatization day at Khare is included in the Mera Peak climbing itinerary. On this day, you will spend the entire day around Khare which is the gateway to Mera Base Camp.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Day 09: Khare to Mera Base Camp

3-4 hrs Trek Tented camp

With every other day passing, you are moving closer and closer to Mera Peak. You will leave Khare early morning to reach Mera Base Camp(5300m) this day. This stretch is not as easy as the earlier trials; rather, it's technically demanding. Your way to base camp will be through the steep way of Mera glacier.

You are known to the fact that the glacier trails are more difficult to walk than the normal ones. You have to reach a glacier top to arrive at Mera Peak Base Camp. Soon after reaching the Mera Base Camp, your Sherpa team will unpack the camping and food equipment. This will be the first day of some more camping days on the Mera Peak journey.

You will rest at the campsite made by your companions and have the delicious food made by them. Spending a night in the camp just under the open and star-dotted sky is such an appealing night. Lay your back nicely as tomorrow is another important day of the expedition.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Altitude: 5300m

Trek Duration: 3-4 hrs

Day 10: Mera Base Camp to High Camp

3-4 hrs Trek Tented camp

After base camp now it is time for ascending the Mera High Camp. Hence, you will sign off from the base camp after having the breakfast made by your Sherpas. The trail from base camp connects the Mera La Pass which is a steep climb through the rocky and snowy track. Even after the Mera La Pass, the track does not seem to slope down; it is as steep as the first stretch.

Pushing your body along the track on a steep track for several hours will lead you to the Mera High Camp. And, then you can inhale the cool breeze from the Mera High Camp with some breathtaking mountain scenes. Peaks like Everest, Nuptse, Baruntse, Chamlang, Makalu, and several others are easily viewable. While you enjoy the view, your crew member will set up the campsite for your rest. Enjoy the food and observe the starry night at the Mera High Camp.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Altitude: 5700m

Trek Duration: 3-4 hrs

Day 11: Summit Mera Peak [6461m/21192ft] and descend to Khare

Tea House/Lodge

This is the most important day of the entire Mera Peak Climbing as you will scale the summit. With all of the mountaineering equipment ready you will move forward way before the first rays of dawn. You have to start climbing, early morning at around 2 AM in order to reach the summit before noon. The Mera peak summit receives strong winds after 12 pm, and this can increase difficulties.

Therefore, after having breakfast, you will follow the footsteps of your experienced guide. The summit climb is easy with no or small technical climbs; you can do it with the right guidance of our guides. Once you reach the top, you will be out-spoken by the views of several eight-thousanders and other peaks. Mt Everest, Mt Cho Oyu, Mt Makalu are some of them.

You will sense a huge level of success while enjoying the mountains from the summit. After all, your months-long dream has come true. Celebrate the glory before descending back to Khare for the night stay.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Altitude: 6,476m

Trek Duration: 8-9 hrs

Day 12: Reserve day in case of bad weather

Tented Camp

The weather of higher regions is very unpredictable. The same is the case about the Mera peak, the weather of the higher Everest region is never a sure thing. Due to the bad weather, it can happen that your summit day can vary. Therefore, as the reserve day, this day works in case of bad weather on the scheduled date. But, if everything has gone according to the Mera Peak Climbing itinerary, you can continue the trek as planned.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Day 13: Trek back from Khare to Kothe

5-6 hrs Trek Lodge

After ticking the bucket list at the summit and returning to Khare, it is time for Kothe. In that stretch, you will pass through Thangnak before reaching Kothe. Thangnak is the same place where you have spent one night already during arrival. But this time, you don't need to stay in Thangnak as the Kothe is easily accessible within 3 to 4 hours of trek.

The route is mostly downhill and down sloped trails are easier and quicker to walk on. While retracing the trail from Khare to Kothe, you will experience a decrease in the altitudes. Your walk will be mostly amid the dense forest of Oak, Pine, Rhododendron trees. Descending trails and lush vegetation, will make you love the experience of retracing the trail.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Trek Duration: 3-4 hrs

Day 14: Trek from Kothe to Tuli Kharka

5-6 hrs Trek Lodge

From Kothe, you will leave for Thuli Kharka after having a nice breakfast at Kothe.

This day is not the same as the earlier day; it involves more uphill trek than downhill. You will be walking past forested trails that will take you towards the western side of Hinku Valley. Thuli Kharka resides just near the Hinku valley, and it is trekkable after the walk of 5 to 6 hours from Kothe.

You will be at Thuli Kharka for the second time to enjoy the amusing time. If you have missed any of the mountain views from the Thuli Kharka, it is the time to recover. Thuli Kharkha hosts the vigilant show of Mera Central and its other faces. Get enough of the Mera peak views before you leave this place.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs

Day 15:  Trek from Tuli Kharka to Lukla via Zatrawala Pass

6 hrs Trek Lodge

Today will be the last day when you will get to trek on the Mera Peak climbing journey. This trek will be fun as you leave Thuli Kharka for reaching Lukla in a single day. Before reaching Lukla, you will pass via Zatrawala Pass one more time. You have to ascend the pass before starting the downhill trek. Zatrawala Pass is high enough to provide views of most of the Everest peaks.

You will get obsessed with the views. After some 6 hours of retracing the trek, you will reach Lukla. You are scheduled to take the flight back to Kathmandu tomorrow. Therefore, this will be the last day at the serene Lukla and Everest region. So, try to get the most out of last night at Lukla.

Meals: (B, L, D)

Mera Peak expedition is a long journey of 18 days, and in those days you will be spending on the other expenses. Those cost heads can be some gifts, drinks, energy bars, tips, donations etc. And there are no ATMs up there in the trail, so you better cash out while in Kathmandu. We think that 250 to 300 USD would be enough to cover most of the extra costs. But extra expenses depend on your habits, choice and preference, so if you are a good spender, then carry some good money.
13. What is the weight limit for the Lukla flight from Kathmandu?
Up to 15 kg is a weight limit which does not need extra cost on the Lukla flight. If you have a backpack heavier than that, the maximum extra limit is 25 to 30 kg which is also liable for extra costs.

Tipping is more like a tradition in the Nepali trekking and climbing journey. Every guide and porter expect some amount of tip after providing the service. There are no exact figures about how much to tip a guide and porters. But, you can give any amount you like, it's all your choice and is not necessary as well. Normally, a guide gets around USD 200$ and the porter gets around 100$ each after the completion of the trip.

You cannot expect quality service there rather be happy with what you have. Accommodation is at its difficult level after leaving the Khare to climb. The teahouses are equipped with solar panels which gives enough electricity to charge your devices. But you have to pay some extra costs for the charging; the teahouses don't provide it freely.

World’s top from Mera peak

When Peak climbing Nepal suggested I do the Mera peak expedition, I had very less idea about it. But I am so glad they gave this suggestion. Mera peak expedition was a great way to explore the Khumbu/Everest region. Turns out this trek is a great way to see the Everest region up close. With very little trekking experience, I could summit this small peak near Everest.

The overall trekking and mountain climbing experience was quite fun. The peak climbing Nepal team made it a whole lot better. They ensured everything I needed for the trek and freed me from the trip’s mental stress.

As an amateur at treks or mountain climbs, I had never imagined seeing Everest up close. The fact that this short mountain climbing trek allowed me to do that is still unbelievable. Although I have a handful of trekking experiences, I never imagined climbing the trails of the Khumbu region. The Mera peak climbing was one of the greatest athletic achievements of my life. Not just the mountain climbing, the overall mountain climbing was excellent.

Peak climbing Nepal’s Mera peak climbing itinerary was the best offer I could wish for. They really added a lot to what I had expected in this trek and made it unforgettable.

Mera peak climbing in the heart of winter

5

Off-season mountain climbs are usually very tricky and dangerous. But I always wanted to see the peak of the world at its prime during winter. So I decided to do the Mera peak climbing through Peak climbing Nepal. I did feel like I overestimated myself by trekking the Khumbu region in the beginning. The climb was exhausting and challenging, but it was all worth it. The snow-covered Khumbu region in the peak of winter was the most ethereal experience of my life. The world’s highest peak, along with mountain ranges adjacent to it with a fresh snow cover, is an immensely beautiful sight.
