3 hrs Trek Tea House
Location: Jhupal | Dunai
Jhupal Altitude: 2475 Meters
Dunai Altitude: 2140 Meters
Before we start our Putha Hiunchuli Expedition, we must approach Dhaulagiri Circuit. We will follow the trail from Jhupal (2475 meters) to reach the circuit. First, we will fly from Nepalgunj to Jhupal, which should take 25 to 30 minutes. After reaching Jhupal, we will rest and prepare for the trek to Dunai (2140 meters).
Our trek starts from the settlement of Jhupal, leading to the terraced fields in the area. We will pass traditional villages before the trail meets Thuli Bheri Khola. We will pass through a suspension bridge over the river, enjoying the scenes of clean blue river water and lush green forests.
As we leave the Thuli Bheri Khola basin behind, we will catch a dirt track trail that stretches up to Dunai Village at 2140 meters above sea level.
5-6 hrs Trek Tea House
Location: Tarakot
Tarakot Altitude: 2850 Meters
Today, we will embark on 5 to 6 hours of trek from Dunai to Tarakot (2850 meters). We will start our journey early in the morning alongside the Thuli Bheri Khola. This hike phase is comparatively less challenging as we usually walk through the river basins. The trail is less steep and offers majestic green forest and vegetation views.
We will follow the trail that aligns with the river and reach Tarakot Village. It is a traditional village that sits aside Thuli Bheri River, which offers a perfect spot for camping and other related stuff. It is a remote settlement built by the locals as Dzong or fortress. We can view Kangmara Peak and others from the Dhaulagiri Mountain Range.
5-6 hrs Trek Tea House
Location: Musikhola
Musikhola Altitude: 2875 Meters
Commencing our journey, we will leave Tarakot behind early in the morning and continue our journey through the trail along the right bank of the river. As we walk uphill through the river banks, the trail leads us to Lesicap (2722 meters). The mystic views of neighboring valleys and rocky gorges with green forests inside will soothe the journey. It only takes a few hours to reach Musikhola from Lesicap, where we will accommodate at a tea house. The total travel duration will be around 5 to 6 hours today.
The campsite is nestled within a forest, with several local dwellings nearby. We will get a warm welcome from the local villagers as we enjoy our stay with the views of the Dhaulagiri Mountain Ranges and the pristine environment around Musikhola.
5-6 hrs Trek Tea House
Location: Kakot
Kakot Altitude: 3250 Meters
Embarking our journey from Musikhola early in the morning, we will head toward Kakot Village at 3250 meters above sea level. The trail becomes more challenging as it frequently collapses and is reconstructed over time. The trail leads us to the narrow region of the river, from where we can have views of the wide opening of the green basins behind us. The majestic views of the Dhaulagiri Range, Kangmara Peak, and Putha Hiunchuli will boost our energy.
As the river narrows, we will pass through a broad trail and catch a stone-paved trail. The local inhabitants built the magnificent steep downstairs to make the hike comfortable. After crossing the adventurous route for a few hours, we will finally get to Kakot, where we will accommodate at a tea house overnight.
5-6 hrs Trek Tented Camp
Location: German Base Camp
German Base Camp: 4400 Meters
Getting to German Base Camp from Kakot takes 5 to 6 hours of hiking. Leaving Kakot Village, we will walk through the uphill trail to the base camp. The German Base Camp is shielded by deep and impassable ravines, for which we must pass two high-altitude passes.
The first pass, which stands at 4,160 meters, is located near German Base Camp. From there, our trek longs towards the second high-altitude pass, from where we continue to reach the campsite near German Base Camp at an elevation of 4,400 meters. Upon our arrival, we will set up a tented camp and stay overnight.
4-5 hrs Trek Tented Camp
Location: Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp
Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp Altitude: 4915 Meters
This is one of the most challenging parts of our trek, where we must cross a high-altitude pass. Though it is not technical, it does not mean that it is not challenging. Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp lies 4915 meters above sea level, posing great risk and challenges to altitude sickness and other related issues.
On top of that, we have to make the steep ascent through the sandy and rocky terrains. It becomes more exhausting since our hike will take 4 to 5 hours. So acclimatization and enough rest are very crucial. We enjoy the scenes of Putha Hiunchuli, Churen Himal, and the Dhaulagiri Mountain Range from the challenging trail. Similarly, the high-altitude pass is a perfect place to have an aerial view of the valleys and basins deep down the region. We will stay at a tented camp at Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp tonight.
19 days climbing towards Mt. Putha Hiunchuli Tented Camp
Location: Putha Hiunchuli | Base Camp
Putha Hiunchuli Altitude: 7246 Meters
Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp Altitude: 4915 Meters
Before attempting to climb Putha Hiunchuli, preparing for the climb is necessary. We will first acclimate at the base camp, letting our bodies adjust to the high altitude. We will go through altitude training, technical climbing training, and the acclimatization process with the help of our guides. This process will continue for a few days before starting our technical climb.
Ultimately, we will start climbing Putha Hiunchuli after a sheer look at the weather condition. If it is extreme, we will wait a few days to advance. While climbing the peak, we will follow the guidelines and instructions of our professional guides. Since the climb is the technically challenging proper use of gears like climbing ropes, ice axes, crampons, and others is crucial. Our guides will fix the climbing ropes, and we follow them very carefully through the steep blue-iced route. Upon summitting the Putha Hiunchuli, aka Dhaulagiri VII, we can see the magnificent views of the surroundings. The high valleys and peaks within the Dolpo region are worth watching, and the golden color of the peak with the rays of sunlight is mindblowing.
The peaks of Churen Himal, Dhaulagiri III, Dhaulagiri VI, Junction Peak, and Dhaulagiri II, from the Dhaulagiri range, offer spectacular views. Similarly, the lush green forests deep down the valley greatly add to our experience.
After successfully climbing Putha Hiunchuli, it's time to revert; we will follow the same route to the base camp with our guides and porters. We will reach base camp and set up a tented camp, where we will stay overnight on the twenty-eighth day of our expedition.
5-6 hrs Trek Tented Camp
Location: German Base Camp
German Base Camp: 4400 Meters
Today, we will return to German Base Camp at 4400 meters above sea level from Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp. We will hike uphill to the two high-altitude passes to reach there, which takes around 5 to 6 hours. Remember, we follow the same trail we walked before to reach the base camp.
We will descend through the rugged trails after reaching the high-altitude pass at 4,160 meters. The route is physically challenging, but the scenery of the Himalayas, including Dhaulagiri II, III, IV, V, and VII (Putha Hiunchuli), will soothe our journey. Also, we can view the green river basins rich in natural vegetation deep down the gorge from the route.
After a few hours of hiking from the pass, we will finally reach German Base Camp, where we will set up a camp for an overnight stay.
5-6 hrs Trek Tea House
Location: Kakot
Kakot Altitude: 3250 Meters
The process of getting back continues as we retrace the same route to Kakot from German Base Camp. To reach Kakot, we will cross another pass in between the route. Leaving German Base Camp, we commence our hike through the rugged downhill trail that is physically demanding. Our hike will total 5 to 6 hours, so we will plan our arrival at Kakot Village by evening.
As we reach the pass through the remote trail, we can have views of Putha Peak, Churen Peak, Kangmara Peak, and others from the Dhaulagiri Mountain Range. Kakot is a traditional village with limited inhabitants and is rich in Himalayan Culture. Upon our arrival at Kakot, we can explore the village, the people, and their backgrounds. Tonight, we will stay at a tea house.
5-6 hrs Trek Tea House
Location: Dunai
Dunai Altitude: 2140 Meters
Today, we will embark on one of the longest hikes in the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition. Commencing our journey, we will head toward Dunai from Kakot Village, which takes around 7 to 8 hours of hiking. We will leave Kakot Village behind early in the morning and catch a rocky trail to the lower altitude.
During the hike, we will catch a trail alongside the Musi Khola and delve into the green vegetation. Also, with the magnificent views of the Dhaulagiri Mountain Range, we move ahead through the trail frequently collapsed and reconstructed over the years.
After that, the river basins open wide to Musikhola. We still have to hike through the banks of the river to reach the first settlement, Lesicap (2722 meters). The banks of the river and the plain land offer trekkers a perfect place to set camp at Lesicap. However, we do not stay here overnight; we will continue our journey to reach Dunai at 2140 meters. From Lesicap, it only takes around an hour to reach Dunai Village, where we will stay at a tea house.
2-3 hrs Trek Tea House
Location: Jhupal
Jhupal Altitude: 2475 Meters
Today is the last day of our hike, where our physical skills are necessary. We will embark on 5 to 6 hours of the long trek from Dunai Village and leave early in the morning. The trek is mostly around the basins of Thuli Bheri Khola, which is rich in natural vegetation. We can see the local children swimming and fishing in Thuli Bheri Khola, which is big. The sounds of irrigation machines set on the rivers will always be heard on this day as we return to Jhupal. Similarly, the local people's terraced fields and agricultural backgrounds are worth watching.
Near Jhupal, we have to cross a suspension bridge over Thuli Bheri Khola. After hiking for the next few hours, we will finally reach Jhupal, where we will stay at a tea house.
Hotel/Resort
Today, we will fly back to Kathmandu on the plane. We will onboard at Jhupal Airport, also known as Dolpa Airport, early in the morning and head to Nepalgunj at 150 meters above sea level. After that, the plane flies above the green terraced fields and dense forests in the inner Terai region. Leaving Nepalgunj, we will reach Kathmandu in around 30 minutes. Our officials will escort all the crew members to their hotel overnight.
Hotel/Resort
The thirty-fourth day of Putha Hiunchuli is free. We can either rest at a hotel or explore Kathmandu City. Places like Narayanhiti Durbar, Rani Pokhari, Basantapur, Patan, and others are worth visiting. We can delve into the inner Newari settlements in the valley and taste the local delicacies.
After the full-day exploration, we can party around Kathmandu's clubs and dance bars. Major clubs like LOD (Lord of Drinks) and Purple Haze throw a party daily with live music and drinks. We can also explore the nightlife of Thamel. Later, we will return to our hotel and stay.
Today, we will pack our belongings and bid farewell to Nepal after a successful Putha Hiunchuli Expedition. After legal formalities, we will reach Tribhuvan International Airport and then fly back to our home country.

Preparations for the Expedition
Climbing Putha Hiunchuli, also known as Dhaulagiri VII, is a challenging job to do. So there needs to be proper preparation in mountaineering to attempt this climb. Mountaineers must prepare physically, mentally, and with the logistics and permits. Similarly, they should acknowledge the technical demands of the Putha Hiunchuli Expedition. Here are some corners where your head should peek regarding the preparation:
Physical Fitness
Putha Hiunchuli is 7,246 meters above sea level, so you need excellent physical fitness to reach the top of it. Reaching the top of it takes around 35 days from the first day of the expedition. Mountaineers first hike to German Base Camp, Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp, and then attempt the summit. The peak features icy frost and rocky and steep routes that need hours of uphill climbing.
Similarly, the route to Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp is also rocky and steep. Hiking through these rugged trails requires good stamina, endurance, and energy. So, climbers must consider physical workouts, such as running or cycling, to improve their endurance. They should focus on incorporating strength training exercises to build muscle strength.
Acclimatization
Acclimatization is a crucial thing to consider during Putha Hiunchuli Expedition. It is basically done to prevent altitude sickness. It includes a gradual climb to higher altitudes and a return to lower altitudes overnight, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude.
Similarly, to stay out of altitude sickness and other related issues, hydration, proper rest, and sleep, oxygen supplements are very crucial.
Technical Skills
Climbing Putha Hiunchuli is not just a trek but a technical climb to the icy region in the Dhaulagiri Mountain range. So, technical climbing skills such as fixing climbing ropes and properly using crampons, ice axes, gaiters, and other gear should be prioritized.
Similarly, climbers should know how to climb the slippery and icy ridges. Skills like rope handling, crevasse rescue, ice climbing, and glacier travel should be in the climber’s skillset.
Permits and Logistics
To climb Putha Hiunchuli, mountaineers must obtain a special climbing permit from Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). This permit costs around $500 in the peak season of Spring, while the price is $250 and $125 in Autumn and Winter/Summer, respectively. You must submit the fees with essential documents to obtain this permit.
Besides permits, climbers should prepare with the logistic facilities like transportation, accommodation, and others. This includes the logistic services of climbers, guides, and porters.
Weather and Route Research
The first thing to note does not to attempt Putha Hiunchuli Expedition during the off-season. And even if you are attempting during the peak seasons like Spring and Autumn, you must not forget to check the weather forecast. Since the weather conditions in the Himalayas can change drastically, you must research the upcoming conditions properly. If it gets extreme, it is wise to postpone the climb.
Moreover, the route to the summit of Putha Hiunchuli should be fixed before attempting it. It will help climbers make a strategic climb from the base camp.
Safety and Risk Management
Safety always comes first while climbing Putha Hiunchuli. Since the expedition takes you to over 7000 meters above sea level, you must be acknowledged of the potential risks such as avalanches, rockfall, and altitude sickness. To minimize the risk, climbers must carry a comprehensive safety kit and know how to administer it. Moreover, they should prepare on an emergency evacuation plan if anything happens during the expedition.
Essential Equipment and Gear
While embarking on the Putha Hiunchuli expedition, having the right mountaineering gear is essential. Without proper equipment, it's almost impossible to climb the peak. Best Time for Putha Hiunchuli Expedition
While Putha Hiunchuli Expedition can be embarked on every season, we only recommend climbing it during the peak seasons of Spring and Autumn. On top of that, climbing Putha Hiunchuli can be influenced by several factors, including time of year, preparation, technical skills, professional guide services, and more. Spring and Autumn are considered the best times for Putha Hiunchuli Expedition.
Spring Season For Climbing Putha Hiunchuli [March to May]
The weather and climate conditions during the Spring are stable, with clear blue skies. The clouds are relatively fewer than in other seasons, giving climbers great visibility. This means that mountaineers can experience the best scenery during the spring season. Similarly, the chance of rainfall is very less, and the wind, rain, and air precipitation are stable, creating a favorable environment for climbing Putha Hiunchuli.
Similarly, Spring is also a season of color as the trees change their leaves, and the forest goes colorful with full blooms of wildflowers. While embarking on the journey to reach Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp, mountaineers can delve into the pristine beauty of the lush green forest with colorful vegetation.
Autumn Season [September to November]
Another favorable season for climbing Putha Hiunchuli is Autumn Season as it boasts a stable and friendly environment. There is less chance of rain and snowfall during this time, and the navigating routes to the Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp are drier than at other times. It allows climbers to walk through the remote trails safely.
Like Spring Season, Autumn also features a clean environment with fewer clouds. It gives climbers good visibility and gets the best scenery from the top of the Putha Hiunchuli and the route. Since Autumn is far from extreme weather conditions, chances of heavy snowfall, avalanches, and rockfalls are less, which is a plus point in terms of safety.
Off-Season Expedition to Putha Hiunchuli | Why You Should Not Climb During This Time?
Monsoon and Winter seasons are called off-seasons to climb Putha Hiunchuli. Basically, these seasons, Monsoon and Winter, pose great threats and challenges while embarking on an expedition. Heavy snowfall, sharp winds, and freezing temperatures are highly likely during the winter. These factors greatly threaten altitude sickness, frostbite, and even death. Without strict preparation, climbing Putha Hiunchuli during winter is almost impossible.
Similarly, during the monsoon season, the region around Putha Hiunchuli gets wet due to heavy rainfall. It can cause natural hazards like rockfall, landslides, and debris flow, making the journey more complicated and challenging. The hot sunny days can be one reason that poses a threat to the climbers as they are prone to sunburn and other related issues. Besides, the wind and rain precipitation is high compared to other seasons.

Had an amazing experience @ Putha Hiunchuli
Wow !! We just don’t have many words to explain the beauty and wilderness of the Dolpo region trekking combined with the successful climb of Putha Hiunchuli. Everything prior to and after the trip was well organized. We have absolutely no complaints about the staff performance and ability to provide the best service. Many thanks to our guide, Dendi Sherpa who guided us all the way to the summit. His wise decisions and leadership made our summit climb memorable experience of our lives. In our heart, e will always remember the incredible effort, from everyone in the team which were equally important for our successful summit climb of Putha Hiunchuli. Besides, exploration of Dolpo region had long been in our important list. We are very satisfied with the whole NGT team and hopefully, come back soon to do some more climbing in future.
