Camp 3 on Everest is where most of the climbers start using supplementary oxygen; in this day’s high altitude climbing towards Camp 3, many may feel like they need to use the oxygen supply.
So, it is important to understand your physical capabilities and keep checking your level of oxygen as you move to higher altitudes. Everest Camp 3 is a 30° snow slope with rocky ledges; after resting at Camp III for a bit, you will climb down to Camp II to spend the night.
Everest Camp II Elevation: 6,400 meters
The oxygen saturation level at the Everest Base Camp is at 50% of what it is at sea level, and it keeps significantly dropping as you scale higher in the mountain; reaching the summit where the oxygen saturation level can drop below 40%. As you get the first taste of the enroute to Camp III, you will use this day as the third and final acclimatization day in your Everest and Lhotse expedition.

Its steep climb to the bumpy ice bulge sections, climbing toward the Yellow Band and Black Turtle up on the Lhotse face.
This climbing section can be hard or easy depending on the weather condition; a dry season means there will be blue ice on the trails, where the climbers have to kick their crampons on the ice exhausting themselves with every step. And although the snow on deep snow on the trail can make climbing easy, it also significantly increases the chances of avalanches.

It becomes extremely exhausting even to do simple tasks at an altitude this high, resting in your tent close to the ‘death zone’ (area over 8,000 meters) on the mountain you will prepare for the final push to the summit of the mountain tomorrow.

Important
It is natural for you to question why to summit both of these peaks at once; alpine adventures are considered to be the hardest and most challenging conquest with significant risk. And the slopes of the 14- 8,000-meter mountains are considered especially treacherous and challenging, so this expedition that leads to the summit of both peaks may seem like an extreme sport to most from the surface value. However, as you will follow the same route as the Everest expedition for the Lhotse expedition from the southeast ridge to Yellow Band, it is a great opportunity to summit both of these peaks in one go.
During your scaling to the higher camps from the base camp, you will already be well adapted to the high altitude environment, which you would have to do again all the way from ground level for a separate Lhotse expedition. Thus, this is an incredible opportunity to conquer both 8,000-meter peaks at once if you are up for it, as you will be already well-adapted to a high-altitude environment and can push for the Lhotse to make a climbing record of two of the highest peaks within 24 hours. Not only that, this is the most cost-efficient way to push for the peaks of both of these mountains, which can cost significantly high if done separately.

Certainly, this quest that takes you to the summit of two of the highest mountains is in no way an easy expedition. The technical segments of the slopes of these mountains even challenge seasoned climbers; nevertheless, it doesn’t mean they are invincible either; with the right amount of preparation and determination, many mountaineering enthusiasts have completed these two peak quests.
In comparison to Everest, Lhotse is slightly shorter, so summit day is naturally shorter for the latter, whereas the climbers have to spend a significant number of hours during the Everest expedition. But, it would be wrong to assume the difficulty level just based on height; the steep rocky and icy faces of the Lhotse are challenging factors to overcome during the expedition. Similarly, the technically difficult Khumbu Icefall, higher atmospheric pressure, traffic jams at the peak seasons, crevasses, and risks of avalanches are some of the challenging factors of the Everest expedition.
The Mt. Everest expedition has received a ‘Difficult and Challenging’ grade, whereas the Mt. Lhotse climbing has an ‘Intermediately- Difficult’ level. So, in the quest for both of these remarkable mountain peaks, you will be using mountaineering equipment and skills to overcome the technical segments. Although the challenges of these massive peaks in the Himalayas may be daunting for many, with the right preparation and strong determination, it is not an achievable dream.

The Everest and Lhotse expedition that takes you to two of the highest elevation points in the Himalayas might not be anything like your earlier alpine adventures. Especially if this is your first expedition in an 8,000-meter class mountain, you need to put in some extra effort for this glorious two-peak expedition. Unlike other 6,000 meters or 7,000 meters class mountain expeditions, you will need to have previous mountaineering experience for this Everest and Lhotse expedition.
It is also recommended that you should start preparing for this adventure at least 6-8 months prior to the actual expedition. Depending on the mountaineering experience, some climbers also extend the preparation over a year. During this preparation time, you need to emphasize several factors.
Learn mountaineering skills: A standard mountaineering class last around 30 to 40 days; if it’s your first mountaineering expedition, you need to learn the technical skills involved.
Assess your capabilities: Even if you are a new mountaineering enthusiast or a climbing veteran, it is important to assess your physical capabilities before the expedition. You can use this to test your capabilities to find out what you are lacking and whether you are in top condition for the expedition or not.
Physical preparation: Include several strength and cardiovascular exercises in your training regime. You could include pull-ups, push-ups, deadlifts, planks, squats, lunges, hammer curls, cycling, jogging, swimming, and cardio exercises in your training program (emphasizing the leg and arm muscles).
Mental preparation: It may seem insignificant as you may be solely focused on physical preparation. But visualizations, mental preparations, focusing on positivity, and learning to stay calm come a long way to help with this remote expedition that leads to the top of the Himalayas.
Get Insights On:
This high-altitude adventure that explores the heart of the Khumbu region before conquering the alluring peaks of the Himalayas offers the best experience during the peak seasons like spring (March-May) and autumn (September- November). The weather is warm during this season, and the climate stays calm offering great trekking adventure as you push for the base camp. Even during these peak seasons, months from ‘April to June’ are considered to be an ideal time for the Everest and Lhotse expedition. These months are known as the ‘climbing window’ for the expedition as they are the warmest season on the mountain and have long bright days making it the most suited time for the high-altitude adventure.
On the contrary, the most difficult and challenging season for this expedition would be during winter (December- February) and monsoon (June- August). The weather is extremely harsh in the Himalayas, and only a handful of mountaineering experts have successfully made the summit of these peaks during the winter season. Similarly, the monsoon’s heavy rainfall, risk of landslides, and slippery trails add some additional challenges to the expedition.

1. Can you climb Lhotse and Everest together?
Yes, the double peak summit, Everest, and Lhotse expedition is one of the most popular mountaineering adventures in the Khumbu region. This ultimate expedition takes you to the peak of two of the 14 highest peaks in the world.
2. Is Lhotse harder to climb than Everest?
Climbing these 8,000-meter class mountains is not easy; Mt. Everest is considered ‘Difficult and Challenging,’ and Mt. Lhotse is an ‘Intermediately- Difficult’ mountain. Even the Everest has significant elevation and takes longer during the summit day, the steep rocky and icy segments can be quite challenging.
3. What is the Lhotse route for Everest?
Lhotse route follows the same route as the Everest expedition from the South Col route all the way up to Yellow Band, offering an incredible opportunity to conquer these high peaks in the Himalayas in a single push.
4. How is the Lhotse climb different from that of Mt. Everest?
Comparing it to the busy routes of the Mt. Everest expedition, where there is traffic to reach the summit of the mountain, the Lhotse summit is much quieter away from the crowd.
5. How long does it take to climb Mt. Everest?
It takes approximately two months to climb Mt. Everest, acclimatization takes the major time of this expedition; climbers slowly push to higher camps and descend down to lowers camps multiple times before finally pushing for the summit.
6. How long does it take to climb Mt. Lhotse?
Scaling to the top of Mt. Lhotse (8,516 meters) takes approximately around 45 days; like any other high mountain expedition, most of the days are taken by acclimatization days to prepare the climbers to prepare for the summit push.
7. Can you climb Everest and Lhotse in one day?
Yes, the summit of both Everest and Lhotse is possible in a day; this ultimate expedition to push for the summit of two 8,000-meter class peaks in the Himalayas can be completed within 24 hours.
8. Are Everest and Lhotse connected?
Sitting right next to each other, these Himalayan massifs, Everest and Lhotse, are connected by the Sout Col. That’s why the mountaineers on both of these expeditions share the same route up to Camp III.
9. Can I climb Mount Everest with no experience?
No, the Nepali government has made it mandatory that any climbers who want to scale Mt. Everest should have at least climbed a mountain in the Himalayas at 6,500 meters or above class.
10. How long does it take to climb the Lhotse face on Everest?
It takes approximately around 6- 8 hours, depending upon the traffic condition on the mountain and rope fixing for the ascending.

KT T2025-05-01Verified Pisang Peak I had a wonderful time with Ngawang Sherpa who was my trekking/climbing guide. Even though we couldn't summit the peak due to me having AMS sickness, i absolutely enjoy myself with the company of my guide and 2 very friendly porters. Never a day dull and as a first timer to Nepal, i am glad i choose Nepal Guide Treks and Expedition as my trekking company. Prakash the managing director has been very accommodating to my last minute change of plans to go to Lumbini from Pokhara. i would recommend to my friends and definitely will come back again next year to try summit pisang peak. Kayla S2025-04-07Verified Amazing trek and summit!! As a solo female traveler (27) that had never been to Nepal, I wanted to make sure I found a group that I felt safe and didn’t have to worry about logistics. I chose Nepal Guide Treks and Expeditions because they had good reviews on TripAdvisor and I am so glad I did!! Prakash was available to answer my millions of questions at all hours of the day. Upon arriving, I met my guide Sonam Sherpa, who was absolutely amazing the entire trek. He clearly has a wealth of knowledge that enabled me to summit Mera peak feeling safe (don’t discount just how high the peak is) and have a great time along the way. I am very very grateful to Prakash and Sonam for making this trip so memorable and enjoyable! All lodges bar one were very good. Flexible approach and success on the peaks. Would use again. elockie182024-11-12Verified Mera Peak We had a great time doing Mera Peak trek. Our guide Samdu was good company and knowledgable. We had some issues with stomach illness, yet he still allowed us to try for the summit (which we made) as he had established our level of experience and trusted we would back out if became unwell with altitude sickness. There were some issues with communication regarding the itinerary and equipment, but these were sorted out (so would be 4.5 stars). We were very grateful for flights in and out of Lukla, when many were going via Ramechap. christina2024-10-17Verified Unforgettable Journey to Manaslu Circuit Trek I recently had an opportunity to trek the Manaslu Circuit with the Nepal Guide Treks team. And it has become one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. The team was professional, friendly and knowledgeable about the entire journey. This made me secure for the worries I had as a first time trekker. The accommodations along the route were cozy and comfortable. And the meal was fresh and delicious. Our trekking guide, Dawa, did everything that could make our journey more enjoyable and remarkable. The Manaslu region was otherworldly. The landscapes that changed from lowland hills and valleys to rugged high altitude terrains were a feast for my eyes. The most adventurous part was crossing the Larkya La Pass. Standing at its breathtaking height was both exciting and rewarding experience. For everyone looking forward to the Manaslu Circuit Trek I recommend you book with Nepal Guide Trek. I am sure that you will not regret it.Load more
