Overview
Langtang Lirung 7,234 meters is the highest summit among Langtang Himalayan Ranges of Nepal. Mount Langtang Lirung Expedition is located in the north side of popular Langtang valley and southwest of Mt Shishapangma (Tibet). Langtang Lirung separates Sunkoshi valley in the east and Trishuli-Gandaki valley in the west. The Langtang Lirung Expedition is difficult Peak to climb. Similarly, Lirung offers unlimited challenges filled with excitement and thrill, making it a perfect option for adventure-seeking mountaineers.
Langtang region remained largely unknown and mysterious until Bill Tilman‘s exploration around 1949. Many attempts have been made for the climb of Langtang Lirung summit. However, the British Expedition team has made the first successful ascent of Langtang Lirung in 1973. A climber needs a high level of technical climbing skills, good physical condition and previous experience of peak climbing for a successful summit of Langtang Lirung Expedition.
One needs to be physically and mentally sound and good with proper endurance ability in order to keep going in the expedition. It offers several climbing routes from Kyanjing Gompa Valley. Langtang Lirung has a large south face which is a matter of headache for the climbers and mountaineers.
According to the record, there have been 14 ascents to Langtang Lirung among which 13 have been unsuccessful attempts. You will also get the opportunity to explore the scenic beauty of Langtang National Park where you can find different floras and faunas.

Related Peak Climbing Packages ( 7001 – 8848m Peaks):
For the most remarkable climbing experience, you should consider doing the Langtang Lirung expedition during one of the peak seasons, i.e., spring (March to May) and autumn (Septemeber to October). These high season/ peak seasons have the most stable climatic conditions that support high-altitude adventures like this. You will have to deal with the less weather-related phenomena on the mountain, like high winds, blizzards, heavy snowfall, rain, etc if you set your climbing dates in these high seasons. Despite the weather-related pleasantry, you will also be able to embrace the Himalayan beauty of two peak points throughout the year.
Spring season is famous for the visually stunning landscape that is decorated with a diverse range of flowers. Similarly, the trails are lush, the waterfalls and rivers are at high tide due to melting snow, the sky is clear, and overall, the mountain view is just simply breathtaking. As for the autumn, you can expect a chill and cool climate, wide Himalayan vistas, dry trekking trails, and the most fascinating cultural experience. Langtang Lirung climbing can also be done during the appropriate period in the monsoon season (June to August) as well, but it can be extremely challenging during the coldest month in the mountain, winter (November to December).
Langtang Lirung is one of the technically challenging 7,000-meter class peaks in the Nepal Himalayas. During this thrilling expedition, the climbers have to navigate their way across the challenging snow and ice section as well as big walls of ice and crevasses. Mountaineers also need to traverse across the ridge and technical slopes on the peak using different mountaineering tools, such as a snow bar, climbing rope, jumar, harness, crampons, climbing boots, helmet, etc. The overall duration of the climb is also another challenging and demanding aspect of the Langtang Lirung expedition.
During the standard duration of the climbing, it will take around 8-9 days to reach the Lantang Lirung Base Camp (4,600 meters). For the remaining part, the climbers will have to scale on the mountain for nearly 21-22 days. Thus, this a physically demanding, technically demanding, and long-haul mountain expedition; the climbing experience is similar to scaling an 8,000-meter peak in the Himalayas with a short duration.
As the physical demand and technical demands of this exhilarating peak in the Langtang Himal range are quite clear, it is not recommended for beginner climbers without any experience. Although the trekking peak and 7,000-meter class mountains are often used as a practice ground for the 8,000-meter class mountain expedition, this technical peak isn’t that different from the 8,000-meter class expedition except in length. Thus, this climb is only recommended for mountaineers who have sufficient technical knowledge and some prior mountain scaling experience.
However, it also doesn’t completely a beginner climber cannot completely do this expedition at all. It is just that, like the trekking peaks in Nepal that climbers can scale without any prior mountaineering experience, this thrilling journey demands some experience and familiarity with different mountaineering tools and skills. If you are just learning mountaineering, have taken classes, and have already scaled a trekking peak successfully, you can assuredly take part in this expedition. The Langtang Lirung expedition is also best suited for climbers who are looking forward to scaling one of the giant 8,000-meter class mountains.
Altitude sickness is one of the major hurdles in high-altitude explorations. Normally, while doing the Himalayan treks, if the altitude is significant, then there is a risk of a milder form of altitude sickness known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). However, as the Langtang Lirung expedition is a mixture of both the high-altitude trek and alpine scaling, there are also risks of severe forms of altitude sickness, such as High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) and High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE). Starting your trekking part for Dhunche Village (1,966 meters/ 6,448 feet) while scaling all the way to the summit of the Langtang Lirung Peak (7,234 meters/ 23,727 feet), the toral elevation gain is around 5,268 meters (17,283 feet).
So, even though the potential risk of altitude sickness is significant, Peak Climbing Nepal will follow all the necessary protocols during the trekking part as well as during the scaling part to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. You will walk slowly on the trail and also take it slow on the mountain, enjoying acclimatization days in between. During the scaling part, you will move along the high camps, ascend, and descend alongside the camps to acclimatize on the alpine slope. Only when you are ready for the summit push your mountain guide will give you a green signal, and you will head toward the summit of Langtang Lirung.
