Overview
Mardi Himal Peak, majestically rising to 5,587 meters /18,330 feet in altitude, is a striking trekking peak in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It lies to the east of the well-known Machapuchare (Fishtail) Mountain. Just behind the popular routes of Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill, Mardi Himal offers an uncrowded but equally picturesque Himalayan excursion. Although once a hidden gem, it has gained much popularity in recent times as a serene alternative in the renowned and busy Annapurna region.
Mardi Himal is graded as a comparatively less technical climb and is ideal for first-time Himalayan mountaineers or those who are making the leap from trekking to peak climbing. The walk up to the Mardi Himal Base Camp takes place through lush forests, small local settlements, alpine meadows and high ridges with the stunning views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machapuchare and Hiunchuli at the backdrop.
The summit push from the High Camp does require basic climbing equipment such as crampons, ropes and an experienced guide but not special technical mountaineering skill and ability. And from the summit, the broad panorama of the snow capped mountains and glaciers as far as you can see on the horizon will leave you awestruck.
Mardi Himal expedition is an excellent combination of convenience, adventure and scenic beauty. It gives you the authentic experience of solitude and wilderness while drawing you close to the grand Himalayas. Every step of the climb is worth it and the deep satisfaction of conquering this stunning mountain will stay with you long after the journey is over.

Pokhara Height: 822 meters/2,696 feet
Drive Distance: around 200 kilometers
Drive Duration: 8-9 hours
The drive begins early in the morning from your hotel or pick-up point in Kathmandu. When you leave behind the congested capital, the landscape gradually transforms from urban spread to hills, rivers and fields layered on top of each other. All these give you a peek into the natural beauty of Nepal’s countryside. As the ride takes you through rural towns and villages, you can also observe the culture and way of life of the local communities.
The path curves through the Prithvi Highway, alongside the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers with sporadic views of white Himalayan summits on a clear sunny day. Some tiny towns and stopping places are on the way where you can relax, taste local foods or use facilities. Naubise, Mugling and Damauli are some of the key spots along the way. While the road is mostly paved, it can be rough or slow in parts because of traffic or construction work.
Though longer than flying, the overland journey allows for acclimatization and a closer look at rural Nepalese life. Upon arrival in Pokhara, a beautiful lakeside city, you will check into your hotel, rest and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Dhampus Height: 1,650 meters/5,413 feet
Forest Camp Height: 2,500 meters/8,202 feet
Drive Distance: 25 kilometers
Drive Duration: around 2 hours
Trek Distance: 12 kilometers
Trek Duration: 5-6 hours
We will depart Pokhara after breakfast in the morning and head towards the starting point of our Mardi Himal trek, Dhampus. The walk goes through rolling hills and rice paddies with occasional views of the majestic Annapurna and Machapuchare. Phedi and Kande are popular spots en route.
After you reach Dhampus, you will have a short halt in the village for lunch and rest. Then we will set off on the trail towards Forest Camp. Leaving Dhampus, the trail ascends steeply through dense forests of rhododendron, oak and maple. The path is not too crowded and the peace will give you a chance to take in the splendor of nature in more depth. The possibility of viewing Himalayan wildlife along the trail, melodious chirps of birds and crackling leaves underfoot make your walk through the forests and hills enriching.
Furthermore you will pass through traditional villages like Pothana and Deurali which give you the opportunity to interact with friendly locals and learn about the traditions and heritage in the Annapurna area.
You will overnight in a simple teahouse in the Forest Camp where a hot dinner is provided. The day is a good initiation into the Mardi Himal trek with its mix of culture, physical activity and exposure to the natural beauty of the lower Himalayas.
High Camp Height: 3,550 meters/11,646 feet
Trek Distance: 7-9 kilometers
Trek Duration: around 6 hours
After a delicious breakfast in the forest camp, we will ascend towards the High Camp of Mardi Himal. The walk is mostly uphill and gradually reveals the wonderful up close views of the Annapurna and Machapuchare peaks. While the trail is picturesque, it also becomes steeper and more demanding as you move higher. The path shifts from dense oak and rhododendron woods to alpine meadows giving you a view of the higher peaks as you proceed.
The higher you hike, the more spectacular the view is with fewer trees, increased ridgeline exposure and wider panoramas of surrounding peaks. The air gets thinner and you can begin to feel the altitude so be mindful of your pace and rest often to acclimatize. Low Camp and Badal Danda are the spots to take serene breaks and view the landscape before ultimately arriving at the High Camp.
After you reach High Camp, you will have some of the best views of Mardi Himal, Annapurna South and Machapuchare. There are few small teahouses and camps where you can rest and enjoy a hot meal.
Mardi Base Camp Height: 4,500 meters/14,763 feet
Trek Distance: 5 kilometers
Trek Duration: 3-4 hours
Mardi High Camp to Base Camp is a short, steep climb that takes you closer to the towering face of the Mardi Himal. The trail begins with a consistent rise on stone fields and alpine meadows taking you above the tree line into open high altitude landscapes.
The scenery is stunning with open views of the surrounding peaks like Mardi Himal, Machapuchare and Annapurna South. Likewise, the blue sky and fresh mountain air add to the reward of the trek.
The farther up, the more open and rocky the path becomes with ridges and loose stones. The thin air and little vegetation make the ascent physically demanding. You may feel the symptoms of altitude sickness, so go slow and don’t forget to drink lots of water.
Upper Viewpoint is the en route spot that will treat you to the sweeping vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. At the Mardi Himal Base Camp, the panoramic scenery of the Annapurna massif and glaciated slopes in all directions is spectacular. As an ultimate approach for climbing the top, it is an appealing resting place as well as acclimatization and preparation stage before the summit push.
Spending an acclimatization day at Mardi Himal Base Camp helps your body to acclimatize to the alpine altitude prior to the summit push. The air is significantly thinner here and the level of oxygen in the atmosphere is very low. Allowing time for your body to adjust to the elevation reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
It is a day to inspect the gear, have a final orientation from the guide and ensure everything is in place for a successful ascent. Besides, you can also take the opportunity to experience the tranquility and raw beauty of the high Himalayas. Spend time immersing in the spectacular views of Mardi Himal’s white ridges, the Machapuchare giant face and the vast Annapurna range. You can simply sit back, relax, take pictures and just wind up with a warm drink in your tent.
Mardi Himal Height: 5,587 meters/18,330 feet
Badal Danda Height: 3,210 meters/10,531 feet
Trek Distance: around 12 kilometers
Trek Duration: 7-9 hours
Today is the most thrilling part of the entire adventure as you will be conquering the stunning trekking peak of Mardi Himal. The summit day begins early before sunrise in order to take advantage of the stable and clear morning weather and cloudless skies.
From Base Camp, the ascent to the summit involves steep and hard climbing, often on snow trails, rocky ridges and parts that call for careful tread. With an experienced climbing guide in charge, proper gear and a gradual approach you will make the final step to the summit of Mardi Peak successfully.
The peak top moment is truly fulfilling with incredible vistas of lofty mountains and vast glaciers and a sense of achievement that very few experiences can match. After a rewarding time at the summit we will retrace our footsteps down to Base Camp. The descent requires vigilance, especially on icy or snowy ground but otherwise is quicker and less exhausting than the ascent. After returning to the Base Camp, we will continue on the trail to Badal Danda.
Situated on a beautiful hill, Badal Danda provides a leisurely retreat with hot food and comfortable teahouses. It is an ideal location to rest and celebrate your Mardi Himal climb.
Siding Height: 1,750 meters/5,741 feet
Trek Distance: 5-6 kilometers
Trek Duration: 4-5 hours
Drive Distance: 10 kilometers
Drive Duration: 1 hour
Badal Danda to Siding is the final walking day of the Mardi Himal trek. The walk starts with a slow and picturesque descent along green forest trails and traditional villages. The hike is enchanting through rhododendron and oak trees gradually opening up to terraced fields and lowland villages. The route lets you appreciate the views in comfort. It passes across local farms and settlements like Low Camp, Forest Camp and Lwang that offer an up-close glimpse of rural Nepali life.
Siding is the endpoint of your Mardi Peak expedition. The village has a peaceful and hospitable atmosphere. It provides you with one final chance to observe the local culture of the area. It is also a wonderful place to relax, enjoy a well deserved lunch and look back on your adventure in the Annapurna area.
Following a hearty meal in Siding, we will board a vehicle to drive towards Pokhara. The ride passes by winding roads over hillside and along riverside. Upon reaching Pokhara, you will be brought back to city life once again.

Spend a day in Pokhara and experience the best of this picturesque lake city. Relaxing and soaking in the scenic beauty of this lovely valley is a great way of wrapping up your exhilarating Mardi Himal Peak climbing trip. At the foot of the grand Annapurna range, Pokhara is full of nature, adventure activities and serene, relaxed settings.
Begin the day with an exciting boat ride on peaceful Phewa Lake surrounded by the sweeping view of towering Machapuchare, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountains. Subsequently, you can visit the World Peace Pagoda on a hill overlooking Pokhara Valley. It is a peaceful spot perfect for relaxation and meditation. Later, a tour of the International Mountain Museum acquaints you with the extensive knowledge of mountain history and mountaineering.
You can visit Sarangkot, the hilltop viewpoint which offers surreal sunrise views of the Annapurna ranges. It also serves as a ground for paragliding, zip flying and ultralight flights. These are the thrilling ways of watching Pokhara’s stunning landscape from the skies. Later in the day, you could also explore Devi’s Fall and Gupteshwor Cave, renowned for their natural beauty and a sense of mystery.
In the evening, stroll around the lakeshore strip which has a bunch of cafes, restaurants and stores. Here you can relax, enjoying tasty Nepali or international fare and soak in the vibrant city vibe.
Powered up by a filling breakfast at the hotel in Pokhara, we will set off for an overland drive back to the capital. We will take the same road via Prithvi Highway driving through the bustling town of Mugling where the Marshyangdi and Trishuli rivers confluence.
On the way, you will have wonderful views of rivers, hills and mountains. The ride passes through Damauli, Malekhu and Naubise which are the big stops along the highway. There are a few stops on the way for snacks and refreshments.
As you start to approach the Kathmandu Valley, the bustle and urbanization gradually replace the rural countryside landscapes. Once you arrive at the capital, you will get transferred to your respective hotel to spend the rest of the time resting, relaxing, eating and getting a good night’s sleep.
Today is your last day in Nepal. You will typically start with a relaxing breakfast at your hotel, giving you a bit of time to organize and pack your belongings in order to leave.
Depending on your flight timing, you will have time for last minute shopping or sightseeing in the nearby areas. You can purchase souvenirs such as Nepali tea, pashmina shawls or local handicrafts as a memento of your Nepal visit.
You would then be dropped at Tribhuvan International Airport for an onward flight departure. Our staff will do the final departure arrangements, hotel checkout and hassle free airport drive.
Safe journey and we await your return to Nepal for the next adventure experience.

Mardi Himal climbing is moderately difficult. Although it is not a technical ascent or requires extensive mountaineering skills, you need to have a good amount of physical fitness and stamina. The trek to the Mardi Base Camp is a gentle climb through forests and alpine meadows.
The trail becomes steep, narrow ridges and potentially snowy or icy ground, especially close to the High Camp and the summit. And the final climb to the summit is tiring, especially due to altitude and harsh weather conditions. Climbers have to be prepared to deal with high altitude conditions and be acquainted with basic mountaineering techniques such as crampons and ice axe skills.
Altitude poses the greatest concern in attempting Mardi Peak with the summit height of 5,587 meters. Thin air and unpredictable weather conditions here present your ascent a challenge and you need to acclimatize well in order to avoid altitude sickness and weather issues.
Mardi is less frequented than Everest or Annapurna Base Camp treks so there are fewer facilities and support services along the way. However, the mountain is often recommended to adventurers seeking their first Himalayan climbing experience. With proper planning, support from licensed trekking agencies and some previous high altitude trekking experiences, most climbers make it to the summit.

Hiring a guide and porter is a key aspect of a hassle free and successful Mardi Himal expedition. The journey involves walking on remote forest trails and high ridges and ascending to alpine zones where weather and terrain become more troublesome.
A certified guide has route-finding experience, terrain assessment and high altitude risk management quality. They enable you to remain on track, monitor your health for altitude sickness and make pacing, acclimatization and safety decisions during both the climbing and trekking phases.
Porters are equally worthwhile as they carry heavy loads of gear and other belongings so you can conserve energy for the climb. On a combined trekking and climbing excursion of Mardi where both distinctive gear and equipment are essential the assistance of a porter is a lifesaver. Without the physical strain of a heavy pack, you can move more efficiently and maintain a better pace. This increases your chances of reaching high camp and ultimately the summit easily and successfully.
Your Mardi Himal Peak climbing journey relies heavily on the support and strength of both guides and porters. Their local knowledge allows you to adjust for changing trail and weather conditions and their presence adds an added security of assurance. Whether trekking steep slopes with low visibility or setting up a tent in strong winds, their experience makes the arduous ascent of the mountain much simpler, comfortable and secure.

Mardi Himal is a high altitude expedition reaching up to 5,587 meters at the summit. The trek usually begins at lower elevations from 1,650 meters in Dhampus and rises consistently along forest trails, alpine meadows and ridge lines of rock. At high altitudes, especially above High Camp at 3,550 meters, air becomes thinner and there are increased chances of altitude sickness or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
The general AMS symptoms are headache, dizziness, nausea, tiredness and breathlessness. These are usually experienced following an altitude gain of over 2,500 meters and the intensity is greater if proper acclimatization is not followed. The final ascent from High Camp to the peak is very exhausting due to the fast rate of altitude gain and low atmospheric pressure leading to altitude sickness.
In order to minimize altitude risk, careful acclimatization by climbing slowly, staying well hydrated and having rest days in between the journey is required. Medications like acetazolamide (Diamox) also help in acclimatization. You should not hasten the ascent and should be willing to descend if the symptoms of altitude sickness worsen. Additionally, guides will be there monitoring your health status and making safe decisions, so you can rest assured that any signs of altitude sickness will be recognized early and handled properly.
The best time to climb Mardi Peak is during the pre monsoon spring months (March to May) and post monsoon autumn months (late September to November). Both these periods have the most consistent weather of the year, providing the best climbing and trekking conditions.
Spring is a fascinating season with good climatic conditions and clear skies and trails with plenty of flowering rhododendrons and vegetation. This renders the trekking phase aesthetically pleasing as well as more comfortable and enjoyable.
For the climbing phase, spring offers reasonable snow cover and lower avalanche risks compared to winter or early summer. Possibilities of weather disruption on summit day are also minimized and you will have a good chance of reaching the summit safely. In general, the spring season arrives with natural beauty along with safe trekking and climbing conditions. It is one of the finest seasons for a successful climb of the Mardi Peak.
Likewise, autumn gives transparent blue skies and clear mountain scenery, dry terrain and stable weather, so both climbing and trekking are safer and more pleasant. The snow and ice conditions are firm and less hazardous. And the weather clarity after the monsoons offers wonderful visibility of the trails and majestic Himalayas. Heavy snows and strong winds are considerably lessened which allows for a secure attempt at the summit.
June to August (monsoon) and December to February (winter) are not recommended for climbing Mardi Peak since the risk is high. Monsoon brings slippery trails, leeches and frequent landslides, making the trekking part unsafe and unbearable. Winter brings harsh cold, heavy snowfall and route blockages, particularly in the upper segment.
Choosing spring or autumn increases your safety level and also enhances the experience as a whole, giving you the best possible chance of a successful and enjoyable Mardi Himal expedition.
Accommodation and meals for the climb of Mardi Himal are well taken care of to provide comfort and energy for the hike and climb. In Kathmandu, you will stay in the hotel on a Bed and Breakfast (BB) plan. There will also be a welcome and farewell dinner at a Nepali restaurant, a flavor of traditional Nepali food and hospitality, before heading off towards the mountains.
When the expedition reaches the climbing phase, generally from High Camp and above, the accommodation switches to tent camps. During this time, all the camping and kitchen equipment is arranged by our team and food is prepared fresh by support staff consisting of a trained chef. The crew provides healthy and calorie dense food to suit the body strain of high altitude climbing. Camping, sleeping and eating facilities are all provided by the crew, so you can focus on acclimatization and the summit attempt.
In the trekking section, lodging is provided by the teahouses run by the local family. They serve as your resting place, dining area and overnight stays. The teahouse rooms are simple but comfy to relax and get you in a resting mood after a trekking day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner meals are available with the food items including dal bhat (lentils and rice), noodles, soups, momo (dumplings), vegetable curries, porridge, bread, eggs and tea. It is advisable to carry snacks such as energy bars and trail mix for extra fuel.
