It may not be the most searched destination for a trek in Nepal but Chulu East Peak is just as good as any popular hiking. The trek is formidably exciting and wild with dazzling white mountains, lush subtropical forest, and classic walking route.

The tracks are a bit old but still firm to accommodate any visitor who traverses the region. Walking through the quiet woods gives a sense of escape and privacy which you would enjoy graciously. Meantime, they are filled with unique vegetation and wild species that you’ll never get sick and tired of hiking.

The entire region is squeezed with divine sceneries rising from plain to the tip of Chulu. Day trippers get to hear the sweet birds’ songs, smell fresh air coming from mountains and step into villages.

Chulu East Peak Climbing is relatively easier compared to other immoderate treks. But it too encompasses off-the-beaten routes, sharp inclines, and glaciated terrains. Trek from base camp is long and strenuous with a precipitous ascent, high cliffs, and firn.

The trail meanders through a narrow ridge covered in snow which without crampons is impossible to walk. Chulu East Peak Climbing starts with a long drive from Kathmandu to Chame and then switches onto the trail that scrambles Pisang.

In subsequent days, the trail takes us to Humde Village, and Junu Khola, crossing several monasteries with prayer flags. Taking a steep climb, we’ll loom at Chulu East Base Camp from where the trek gets tougher.

Spending a day for acclimation, we’ll set up on a strenuous ascent that serves up rough trails, snow steps, and glaciers up to the summit. The trek gives a fair chance to climb high and place at Tilicho Lake. Climbing down the trail will take us past Jomsom and a picturesque flight to Pokhara.

Highlights

  • Shimmering snow peak view of Annapurna Circuit, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak
  • Exploring old monasteries and remote villages for cultural exchange
  • Enjoying the quiet turquoise water of Tilicho Lake
  • Encountering some of the wild animals while traveling through the forest
  • Spinning wheels and watching mani walls

Day 1

Arrival at Kathmandu

Once you arrive at the airport, our officials will trace and approach you right away. They’ll show up at the waiting zone prior to your scheduled flight so don’t panic of being ignored. After a short and sweet introduction, they’ll transfer you to a hotel where you can take a restful nap or walk on the street. Day 2

Sightseeing in Kathmandu

Click here for detailed information about World Heritage Sites of UNESCO in Kathmandu

It makes no sense of touring Kathmandu unless you don’t visit UNESCO World Heritage sites. So, today, we’ll explore the phenomenal Kathmandu city, drop by historical monuments, and try out tasty local food.

We’ll drive down the busy streets of Kathmandu and stop at Boudha Stupa, a sacred pilgrimage for Buddhists. It's dome-shaped and embellished with prayer flags and wheels which the visitor too can spin. Following that, we’ll take a trip to ancient durbar squares at Kathmandu Valley.

If it’s possible, we’ll take you through all three durbar squares to ransack royal palaces, learn primordial Nepali architecture and tradition. There are waves of statues, well-carved stone temples, stone images of gods and goddesses that you’ll find

In the evening, we’ll visit Pashupatinath Temple and watch the Hindu ritual of light being offered to deities. With that, our day trip to Kathmandu city comes to an end. We’ll drop you off the hotel to rest for the night.

Note: It is not possible to visit all world heritage sites in Kathmandu within a day. So you can choose at least 3-4 places for day sightseeing.

Meals: BB Plan

Day 3

Drive to Chame

Saving all the sweet memories of Kathmandu, we’ll formally start our trek to Chulu East today. Our first destination is Chame which takes about 8 hours’ time by shuttle. So, to be on time, we have to move fast and start driving on Prithivi Highway as early as possible.

Our ride from Kathmandu is not so joyful but after coming along Trishuli River, it starts to light with mesmeric views. Driving through the hilly roads is exciting as we get to witness lush green forests and roaring streams that look magical.

After coming a long way, we’ll drive beside Marsyangdi River and remote Nepali villages. With the expansion of pavement, we’ll get up to Chame instead of just Besisahar. We’ll spend the first night of the trek at a lodge in Chame.

With a delightful morning of Annapurna, we’ll get on the trail via Kani and pass the old monastery. We’ll keep walking along a steep hill that goes through a luscious pine forest. After gaining altitude, we’ll come to a rugged trail filled with chunks of rocks and river on the left side.

Traversing underneath the sheer cliff and crossing multiple suspension bridges over Marshyangdi river, we’ll arrive at Dukhure Pokhari. As we walk further into, the trail unrolls magnificent views of Annapurna II throughout the voyage. After nearly 6 hours of a trek through a long stone staircase and mani walls, we’ll arrive at Upper Pisang. Overnight stay at a lodge in the primordial village of Pisang.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 3300 meters

Trek Distance: 13.7 km

Day 5

Trek to Humde Village

After breakfast, we’ll move ahead of Pisang and approach Humde Village. It is somewhat easier than the previous trek with few ascents and dusty roads that come across well-put rock walls. Walking the trail is a lot more fun with glorious mountain views, soaring hills, and monastery.

More famous for its airport, Humde is a beautiful village in the east of Manang. The airstrip is nearly 2.5 kilometers from the town of Manang and the center of attraction. In fact, the whole Humde village is jammed with spectacular places, magnificent views of mountains and landforms.

You’ll also get to explore the region's longest mani walls, turn 266 prayer wheels with a right hand that rolls from the center of the village. The accommodation has been arranged at a local lodge in the village. This marks the culmination of another day for Chulu East Peak Climbing.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 3350 meters

Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs

Day 6

Trek to Julu Khola

Waking up to the cool breeze of Chulu, we’ll have breakfast and get our stuff ready before leaving for the trail. The walk is a bit easy today with a few steep climbs and walks in-between the dense forest. Refresh the mood while strolling into the woods stacked with juniper and pine trees.

After a short time off at Humde village, we'll restart our trek and follow the trail that heads to Julu Khola. The trek keeps running on until we don't find reach the campsite at Yak Kharka. The places take precedence here offering splendid sights of a snow peak, dramatic high cliffs, and rock formation.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 4640 meters

Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs

Day 7

Acclimatization at Julu Khola

The air starts to get thin after Julu Khola and increases the possibility of altitude sickness. So we’ll just take the day off before scrambling the way to base camp. To make the day worthwhile, we’ll have a few short distance hikes and explore nearby villages.

This will help us adapt to the changing weather and avoid side-effects of high altitude. Out of many great options available, we choose Chulu Far East Peak for the day trip as it gains elevation.

Therefore, after having breakfast, we'll take slow steps towards the campsite through forested riverbeds and lush hills. The walk provides fabulous mountain views, panoramic landscapes, and wildlife.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 8

Trek to Chulu East Base Camp

After making the most out of acclimatization day and feeling refreshed, we shall be moving to the trail now. Coming out of the village, we'll take the lane that climbs uphill to meet Chulu Far East Base Camp.

With the trail slipping in rocky landforms, it becomes quite strenuous to walk. So, to prevent exhaustion, we'll control our pace of walk and take back to the backrest. We'll keep scrambling the trail for a good 6 hours to arrive at Chulu East Base Camp. We'll place a camp to spend the night.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 5140 meters

Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs

Day 9

Acclimatization at Chulu East Base Camp

Hike from Chulu East Base Camp is considerably hard and tiring with undulating routes and glacial terrains. Walking too high at once can make the body ache and difficulty in respiration. Therefore, we take the day rest and let the body adapt to the decrease in oxygen concentration in the air.

Rather than just sitting dull and killing time, we'll trek around the base camp and explore secluded regions. For acclimation, we’ll walk a bunch of places that have precipitous climbs and breathtaking views of mountain ridges. As the sun goes down, we’ll head back to the camp and rest peacefully.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 10

Trek to Chulu East High Camp

After taking proper rest, we can now head to Chulu East High Camp hiking up the inclined trail. As the path moves ahead, it crosses snowy slopes that can be only traversed with crampons. The trail continuing uphill is exhausting and takes plenty of time but comes with a reward.

Throughout the trek, we get to glance at Pisang Peak, Annapurna massif, and Chulu West. The time to be spent at the high camp is equally awesome with spectacular views of landscapes and the vibrant valley below. Our crew members will set up the camp and do the necessary preparation for Chulu East Peak Climbing.

Maximum Altitude: 5600 meters

Trek Duration: 8-9 hrs

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 11

Summit Chulu East Peak

It's the deciding day for whether our days of hardship and effort on the trail will pay off or be pointless. So, carrying the backpack full of equipment, we’ll steadily follow the trail that runs through glaciers and moraine.

With the support of the trek guide, we’ll beat the section that’s extremely challenging and move ahead of Chulu East Peak Climbing. Spending close to 11 hours on the trail over sheer cliffs, ice slope, and open gully, we’ll summit the mountain at long last.

From the top, you can look vacantly across the heart-rending view including Annapurna II, GlacierDome, and Dhaulagiri. After exploring the hidden glaciers and mountains, we’ll step back and walk the same trail descending base camp.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 6584 meters

Trek Duration: 11-12 hrs

Day 12

Trek to Manang

After that incredible journey to the summit of Chulu East Peak, it’s time we return to the trail. We shall start cleaning the base as soon as possible and leave for the route that leads to Manang.

Within hours after navigating the trail, we’ll be again reminded how gorgeous the region is. The quiet trail inclining as far as Khangsar is terrific with picturesque views. Hopping the bridge over Khangsar Khola, we'll get easy access to Khangsar village.

We’ll carry on with an uphill trek that brings out a crystal-clear view of Chulu East and its neighboring mountains. Hiking out of the base camp to the north in Manang for almost 8 hours, we’ll finally reach Siri Kharka.

At this point in time, we’ll be left with no choice than to take a glimpse of natural scenery and go straight away to the lodge. We’ll spend the night there and continue trekking the very next morning.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 3519 meters

Trek Duration: 5-6 hours

Day 13

Trek to Siri Kharka

With the trek lasting more than 7 hours, it’s going to be a long and stressful day on the trail to Siri KharkaThus, we fill the stomach with a plateful of yum foods and start hiking the dramatic trail up to Khangsar. The elongated trail demands a lot of physical strength when continuously slopes upwards.

After coming across the Khangsar Khola, we’ll head towards the village to Shree Kharka. Once we end up in the village, there’s a little sightseeing to be done, watch blue sheep, and interact with locals.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 4060 meters

Trek Distance: 10.5 km

Trek Duration: 7-8 hrs

Day 14

Trek to Tilicho Base Camp

Trek to Tilicho Base Camp is slightly easier than what we experienced with Siri Kharka. So

chill out and enjoy the sublime view of mountains until you are not finished doing breakfast. From there, we’ll descend the hill over a narrow trail that moves through areas prone to landslides.

Hence, move carefully while embarking on the trail and watch out every step. We’ll also come across ice lakes and glaciers while leading towards Tilicho Lake. While this is fun watching, walking the trail is extremely difficult and bugging.

Passing through the wild forest, we’ll have a high chance to spot wild animals and birds. Eventually, after trekking proper 6 hours, we’ll reach Tilicho Base Camp which is also our dwelling for the night.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 4200 meters

Trek Distance: 7.2 km

Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs

Day 15

Trek to Tilicho Lake

Morning hours are perfect to witness the impeccable beauty of Tilicho Lake so wake up an hour early to live the heart-warming moment. Shortly thereafter, we’ll have breakfast and start making our way through ice sheets and snowy trails.

There’s a strong wind in the evening at Tilicho Lake. Therefore, to avoid the cold we’ll complete the trail as fast as possible. Upon reaching the spot, you can enjoy the peculiar lake and its surrounding nature.

Seasonal changes don't harm the lake’s beauty. It’s circled by high mountains which constantly supply fresh water to the lake. After exploring the series of mountains and clear blue water, we’ll get back to the trail and walk steadily. The night is to be spent at the tented camp.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 4919 meters

Trek Distance: 10 km

Trek Duration: 4-5 hrs

Day 16

Trek to Yak Kharka via Mesokanta La

After having a real good time at Tilicho Lake, we shall be heading towards the trail right off. We’ll climb down the puffy route covered with snow and cross the Mesokanta La pass at 5120 meters. Walking the pass involves lots of technical climbing so pay attention while traveling the route.

From there, we’ll follow the trail 400 meters above Khangsar village and come across the ruins. Subsequently, we’ll lead an unmarked route that walks on a wooden bridge over the Thorung Khola river. Arriving in Yak Kharka after a 7 hours trek, we’ll get some warm tea and spend the spare time touring villages. Overnight stay at the village in a local lodge.

Meals: All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Maximum Altitude: 5120 meters

Trek Distance: 10 km

Trek Duration: 6-7 hrs

Day 17

Trek to Jomsom

With the end of another wonderful day at Chulu East Peak Climbing, it's about time we climb down to Jomsom. In order to make it happen, we’ll dash towards the trail soon after having breakfast.

Descending the trail from Yak Kharka, we’ll proceed towards Marpha in the north. This incredibly stunning village is famous for its apple garden. Going forward, we’ll take an easy trail moving towards Jomsom which is the center of Manang District.

The place is astounding with historic museums, old monasteries, and manuscripts. Visitors are surrounded by glistening white mountains and landscapes of a softer red hue. To spend the wintry night, we’ve booked a room in a lodge at Jomsom.

Flight to Pokhara usually lasts 20 to 25 minutes throughout which we get to watch the series of mountains and waterfalls.

After taking down the city, we’ll set off on a lakeside tour, visit Barahi Temple, and a few other adventurous places. Fewa lake makes the perfect spot to watch the sunset and Mt. Machhapuchhre so we’ll stay at the lake till late evening. We’ll be back at the hotel before dinner and take a peaceful sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fitness and Experience
Is the trek difficult? How many hours does a trekker walk in each day?
Can the trek be done by beginners?

There’s no denying that Chulu East Peak is made for novice trekkers who wish to climb mountains but scares walking too long. With the highest elevation being 6584 meters, the snow peak is dedicated to hikers of all ages. The trek begins on a smooth surface of Pokhara, before heading off to a series of towering hills, remote villages, and base camp. Under the supervision of a pro guide, trekkers will pass the glacial terrain and get a chance to stand at the top.

How difficult is Chulu East Peak Climbing?

Although it’s known as a nonclimbers trek, ascending Chulu East Peak is no cream puff. The trail consists of many technical climbs including a string of steep hills, suspension footbridges, and glaciers. It combines the densely forested trails with a rugged one, making the trek awfully tiring and lethargic. Climbing up the passes is just as bad as scrambling mountains with rocks and debris.
